A place for tears, a place for laughter at Ebenezer Church

Case Study: A hub for community at Ebenezer Church, Horfield.

Ebenezer Church in Horfield, Bristol, is on a mission to create a space that feels like home for everyone. Led by Stewart North and an enthusiastic team of volunteers, the church is evolving into a real community hub.

Stewart, one of the church leaders, explains the goal simply: “We’re motivated by that ‘love your neighbour’ bit in the Bible, and that’s gotta have legs — it’s gotta look like something in the every day.”

For him and the others involved, this isn’t about just showing up to do a job. It’s about truly connecting with people, building friendships, and creating a safe, welcoming spot where everyone can feel seen and supported.

On any given day, you might find people chatting over coffee at the community cafe, while just down the hall, others meet for the Kintsugi Hope Wellbeing Group, a place where people facing emotional struggles can find support. The church also hosts a food bank, providing essential resources to folks who need them.

“People from all walks of life come here,” Stewart shares. “We have folks who’ve been through some tough times, and others just looking to connect. What’s special is seeing people come alongside each other — there’s a place for tears, a place for laughter. It’s a normal, comforting space for everyone.”

This blend of activities makes Ebenezer Church much more than a religious space. It’s becoming a spot where community members of all ages and backgrounds feel they belong.

“We want people to bring their own gifts and ideas. Every community is different, but there’s a lot we all share, and it’s amazing to see people help shape what this place is becoming.”
